In a river of thought,
I saw a shadow pass

like raindrops on white marble.

I caught the memories that—
in my head—

as fireflies swarmed over grass.

I touched their little wings
of silver-shimmering glass,
and marvelled at their amber eyes

through which I’d seen so much:

Water, stone, wood, night and day,
and sharp red rocks against a golden sky—
so many skies, both
star-strewn, starless,
clouded, bright—
and many a friend who crossed my way.
