The Reylo Sin Anthology is a collection of fanfiction by various fanfiction authors. Fanfiction in the Reylo Sin Anthology features lots of explicit sexual content or smut. In other words, Reylo Sin Anthology fanfiction is porn. One does not have to be religious to know that porn is bad and why. One doesn't have to dislike it or be opposed to porn for religious reasons. Plenty of non-religious people know it is bad, know why it is bad, and oppose it.
One such work of fanfiction for this collection is called Sovereign Loyalties by Kylo's Kitten, the creator of the Reylo Sin Anthology. The premise of Sovereign Loyalties is as follows: Kylo Ren is the Galactic Emperor. Rey is a scavenger on Jakku. Emperor Kylo sees Rey while on a business visit to Jakku and is attracted to her immediately. He brings her to his palace on Naboo and makes her his concubine (In the story, Kylo says he doesn't like the word "concubine" and prefers to use the word "consort" to describe what Rey's position is). (He kidnaps her after he makes preparations for her arrival at the palace). The author states on her Tumblr that as the story progresses, Emperor Kylo and Rey's mutual lust develops into mutual love and respect. She reveals that Emperor Kylo later marries Rey, making her his Empress. She even posted a painting of them on their wedding day that she commissioned for her story.
It is good that the relationship grows from mutual lust to mutual love and respect. However, at the beginning of the story, the relationship is still intrinsically immoral. I have read the four chapters she has posted, but I scrolled to skip over the racy and sexually explicit parts.
I do not think sex is bad and disgusting. It is very good in and of itself. But as a Catholic Christian, I believe that the proper place for sex is within marriage between a man and a woman and behind closed doors. It does not belong in books, movies, TV shows, etc for everyone else to see. But the fact that Rey and Kylo were sleeping with each other outside of wedlock is not the only problem with their relationship at the beginning of the story.
I've already said that their relationship at the beginning is intrinsically immoral. Here's why: their relationship is that of a monarch and concubine. When she meets Kylo, Rey realizes that he had brought her to his palace to live there for his pleasure. Even though he promises to do everything in his power to find her family, he is still turning her existence into one for his own pleasure. That's messed up.
Now, I'm a Reylo shipper, and I am well aware that their relationship is toxic and abusive in the canon universe. I only ship them after he redeemed himself. I have no problem with people writing Reylo fanfiction. After all, I've started writing one myself.
There are other more healthy ways to write a fanfiction in which Kylo is the Galactic Emperor and wants to be closer to Rey once he lays his eyes on her for the first time. Not every single Reylo fanfiction has to be full of smut and designed to elicit lust within the reader. Lust is disordered sexual desire and says, "This is your body taken by me." Lust is one of the seven deadly sins.
In Sovereign Loyalties, Rey tells Emperor Kylo that she wants him to take her. This is lust talking, folks. It's not good.
Properly ordered sexual desire is good and says, "This is my body, my very self, given up for you." The only person who should be stimulating sexual desire (and properly-ordered sexual desire, mind you) within you is your spouse.
However, as with other porn, you can read smutty Reylo fanfiction and not be driven to lust. It is possible to look at pornographic material and be disgusted and hurt instead of driven to lust. However, that does not mean you should view porn of any kind. As I said, plenty of non-religious people are opposed to porn. In fact, a Catholic speaker named Matt Fradd has written a book on why porn is bad from a secular perspective. The book is called The Porn Myth. I haven't read it myself.
But getting back to Reylo's relationship at the beginning of Sovereign Loyalties, the fact that Rey and Emperor Kylo sleep with each other outside of wedlock and the fact that the story is written to elicit lust within the reader is not the only problem. It is also problematic because the relationship is that of a ruler and concubine and therefore, Kylo is using Rey for his own inordinate pleasure and gratification.
Sovereign Loyalties is basically the Reylo version of 50 Shades of Grey, except there is no BDSM garbage and Kylo is a monarch, not a wealthy and influential entrepreneur. (Note: I have not read or watched 50 Shades and I have no intention of doing so.)
Now, I had an idea for a healthier and less morally problematic version of this story, which I am going to write.
Kylo is the Galactic Emperor. He is attracted to her after he lays his eyes on her. But instead of bringing her to his palace (technically he kidnapped her in Sovereign Loyalties) to be his concubine, he hires her as his personal aide/assistant or his secretary. Both of those positions are morally licit ones that would allow him to get closer to her and that would allow them to get to know each other. Plenty of political and civil officials have a personal aide/assistant in our world. And I am sure that political and civil officials in a galaxy far, far away also have personal aides/assistants.
People can write Reylo fanfictions in which the relationship isn't intrinsically immoral.
My last issue with the Reylo Sin Anthology is the attitude towards sin.
The definitions of sin on the Merriam Webster website are:
A: an offense against religious or moral law
B: an action that is or is felt to be highly reprehensible
C: an often serious shortcoming: FAULT
2A: transgression of the law of God
B: a vitiated state of human nature in which the self is estranged from God
For my purpose, A, B, and 2A are the most suitable definitions.
Authors and fans of the Reylo Sin Anthology view sin as something to be celebrated and accepted as OK and normal.
Let me tell you that sin should never be accepted as OK and normal. And it should never be celebrated. What's worse is that these people are celebrating sins that are sexual in nature. In Catholicism and Christianity, sins that are sexual in nature are called sexual sins or sins of the flesh. In Catholicism, sins of the flesh are big, serious sins. A long time ago, Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. She told them many things, but she told them that many people will go to Hell because they committed sins of the flesh more than any other kind of sin and didn't repent of their sexual sins.
So I don't want to read Reylo fanfiction with lots of smut and intrinsically immoral relationships. I don't want to see pornographic pieces of artwork that accompany written works in the Reylo Sin Anthology. I have already gone into my Tumblr settings and added "18+," "NSFW," and "Reylo Sin Anthology" to the tags and post content I want to filter out of my Tumblr feed.
By creating and posting this stuff, the creators of this content are putting their own souls and the souls of others in jeopardy. I don't care if these people aren't religious. But if my religious arguments don't work, then perhaps this secular, scientific-research-based argument will: many studies have been done on the negative effects porn has on the human brain. Porn is extremely damaging to your brain. It is a poor substitute for real human connection and intimacy. If human connection and intimacy is what you want, don't turn to porn. It's a fake and cheap version of human connection and intimacy. Instead, go spend time with your friends and family. Get out there and meet new people. By posting pornographic Reylo fan content, you open the door to people getting addicted to porn.
