Content advisory
Sex/nudity: There is a mild implied sexual encounter between Maverick and Penny. Maverick is shirtless while Penny is fully clothed. They are briefly shown kissing in bed before the scene transitions to them talking and laughing.
Maverick and the pilots he's training for a special mission are shown playing football on a beach. Maverick and the rest of the guys are shirtless while a young woman is wearing a sports bra and shorts during the beach football scene. The scene is not sexual.
Profanity: the middle finger is used, the F-bomb is used twice (one of them is dropped during an action sequence), hell, son of a bitch, balls, ass, damn, dick, and shit are said.
Alcohol & drugs: There are a couple of scenes at the bar Penny owns. In one of the scenes, Maverick is persuaded to let everyone else have drinks on him.
Intense & frightening scenes: The scene in which Maverick has a flashback of Goose's death from the first movie can be a little intense and emotional.
The fighter jet sequences can be intense, particularly the dogfight sequences.
There are several times when the movie gave me a scare because I thought they killed Maverick off or they were going to kill him off.
Ice's funeral can be really emotional
One of the pilots passes out due to the extreme G-force and nearly crashes his fighter jet.
Several scenes show fighter jets crashing
A surface-to-air missile hits Rooster's jet but Rooster ejects in time
Violence & Gore: Brief, mild scuffle between two pilots
The plane Maverick is testing at the beginning of the movie overheats and blows up but Maverick ejects in time offscreen. Maverick walks into a diner, tired and dehydrated, but not seriously injured.
Fighter jets are shown being shot at and blown up in a not too graphic way
Maverick takes an incoming missile meant for Rooster and his fighter jet blows up and crashes. Though not shown immediately, Maverick ejects in time.
An enemy helicopter fires at a defenseless Maverick, but Rooster shows up in his fighter jet and shoots the helicopter. The helicopter explodes and crashes.
Surface-to-air missiles are launched at several fighter jets
A bird hits one of the fighter jets and its blood splatters on the glass, but it is brief and easy to miss (blink and you'll miss it).
Goose's bloodied body floating in the sea during the flashback from the first movie is shown.
A surface-to-air missile hits Rooster's jet but Rooster ejects in time
An enemy fighter jet gets a lock on Maverick and Rooster, who are in a stolen F-14, and fires a warhead at them, but another pilot shows up at the last minute and shoots the enemy fighter jet and the missile.
A Tomahawk missile strike is carried out on an airfield during the special mission sequence
Catholic/Christian themes, if any: Letting go/detachment, teamwork, humility, and the importance of the human person over technology are some of the themes in this film and these themes are deeply Catholic/Christian.
Overall: I love the original Top Gun and I love this one just as much. It's a worthy sequel to a classic film. Tom Cruise was in his late teens or early twenties in the first movie. He has aged well.
