Thus sang Lupus, and from his song, the first pack came.
His first creation was Canis Major. He was a big, glowing wolf in Lupus' likeness, the beta to the first alpha. Lupus gave Canis Major his courage, for that the second wolf would dare to face the darkness. Immediately the great defender sprang towards the darkness, chasing her back, as she had realized, how dangerous Lupus was for her, and began her attack.
No wolf today is like Canis Major, neither in stature nor in strength nor in speed. He was the wildest fighter, ready to give his life for his alpha. And he almost did! For even a wolf as strong as Canis Major was no match for the darkness.
Thus Lupus sang a brother for him, Canis Minor. The smaller wolf looked just like the first two, but his power was of a different kind. He was of no less strength than his older brother, though he would lose in every fight. For Canis Minor didn't get Lupus' courage, but rather his compassion and that certain power in the first wolf's song that gave new hope to everyone that heard it.
Canis Minor fought alongside his brother and got his back, he gave Canis Major strength to keep facing the darkness. But even now they still didn't stand a chance, and so Lupus continued singing:
Ursa Major was no wolf, she was a big bear. From Lupus she gained his strength, for he understood they needed more than courage to win the war.
The world was shaken when the she-bear let out a mighty roar and joined the fight. She drove a path right through the darkness. But even a mighty warrior like her couldn't turn fate - even though her hits, powered by Canis Minor's ability, severely wounded the enemy of the light. But the bear's pelt grew darker. She was surrounded by darkness, and the more she hit her, bit and clawed, the longer she stared into the gloomy eye of her fiend, the more her inner light was darkened.
Lupus had foreseen that the battle would be long when he awoke Canis Minor, and he continued to sing. This was how Ursa Minor appeared.
She was a bear as well, but she was smaller. Her strength was different, just like Canis Minor differs from Canis Major. Ursa Minor had no strength for battle, but she was able to withstand the darkness. Even more, she could protect her friend's hearts from the influence of darkness, and even to this day, she is guarding the strongest light in the night sky. While the wolf brothers were still fighting back to back, Ursa Minor made her way over to her big sister and stood with her as her shield, as her light in the dark.
Lupus, who was watching the battle, knew they would need neither courage to press on nor more strength. In direct battle, darkness would always win, even if he would send a thousand bears, and no courage in the world could then send wolves into the lost war.
Hence Lupus created the fifth titan, all the same, his most conflicted creature. Vulpecula, the cunning friend, was a fox with a pelt like fire. He was small, nimble, and quick, in his verse Lupus put all his cunning, his plotting, his finesse, and cleverness.
This helped the fighters greatly, for Vulpecula began to run here and there, teaching the fighters to trick the darkness. Without pause, he ran across the battlefield and called to them what they should do. With his help they gained a lot of ground, victory even seemed close, but Lupus did not trust it. He continued singing, and this was good. For Vulpeculas tricks were loud and effective, but shortsighted, and they could not have fought in this manner forever.
Next Lupus sang the verse of Lynx, the silent friend. With a mighty jump, the star-lynx came to the side of the first wolf. He got all of Lupus' wisdom. For a long time, Lynx only watched the struggle. Finally, Vulpecula even called him a coward. But actually Lynx had just needed time to be sure of his tactic. Then he ordered them to form a protective ring around Lupus instead of chasing after the darkness, and through this wise advice, they could avoid a counterattack that would've otherwise cost many of them their life. For the darkness knew tricks as well, and she was much older and more experienced than Lupus or Vulpecula.
Advised by Lynx Lupus sang for the five scouts so that they could overview the fight.
The first scout was Phoenix, a bird with feathers of fire, who flew just above Lupus' head. He shone more brightly than any of the titans, almost as bright as Lupus himself. Lupus gave him knowledge of hope, for Phoenix should always search for their victory, their goal when watching the battlefield.
The second scout was Grus, a crane of blue who shimmered like an aurora. On mighty wings, he flew in a direction that is since known as west. As the world has not yet been turned by the war, the west was the home of spring.
Lupus gave Grus knowledge of love and friendship, which bind a pack. For their victory should be one for everyone, the goal one for all of them.
The third scout was Aquila, an eagle with feathers golden like the sun. He flew into a direction that was hence known as north, and at this time it was the home of summer.
Lupus gave Aquila knowledge of justice so that nobody would have to carry too much of a burden while fighting. Aquila should take care that everybody had a task fit for their abilities, which they could master.
The fourth scout was the raven Corvus. Other than with today's ravens his feathers were white as stars. He flew east, where autumn resides, and Lupus gave him knowledge of time and change. He was able to see the exhaustion of the warriors and could scout how the battle would develop, so he was of great help in these times.
The fifth and final scout was the silver swan Cygnus. Following a mighty stream he reached the south, which was the home of winter. Lupus gave him knowledge of loyalty and honor. Cygnus' haunting calls pulled the fighters together so that they won't leave their friends alone, no matter how tired or hurt.
Now, under the gaze of the five scouts, the two wolfs, two bears, and two friends fought against the power of the eclipse, and Lupus saw that they would win. But victory only meant that the darkness would hide away. Even then she had many servants, which were a part of her, similar to how Lupus and the titans were one and many. There was no hope to destroy the darkness for good, the world was too big for such a feat. Even the titans could not light up every nook and cranny, a piece of their enemy would always survive. Darkness would always be able to hide and grow out of sight. Lupus knew his last two verses would have to call on fast messengers, which could warn the others in case the darkness gained enough strength for a new battle.
The first messenger was Pegasus, the stallion of stars, a winged horse. Lupus gifted him all the endurance of a wolf on the hunt, and Pegasus could run for years to carry news.
The second messenger and the final titan, Lepus, was small, nimble, and quick. He was a rabbit, whom Lupus gifted with all the skill of the final moments of the hunt when hunter and prey join in the dance of fate. No power under the stars can catch Lepus.
Finally, Lupus had to fall silent. But the battle, this fight of the early days, was won. The darkness flew the power of the unified titans. Rejoice echoed near and far, and for the first time, the world was light, without a trace of darkness.
But the world was empty. There was nothing, not even stars, no life except the titans, no land, and no sky. Knowing the darkness was not yet defeated, Lupus and the titans agreed to create a safe haven, a protected land into which the darkness may never enter.
