Dean: "What's the word, Cas?"
Cas: "It's a shortened version of my name."
Dean: "Yes, it is. I meant what's the word on the Word? Any, uh, tablet chatter on angel radio?"
Cas: "Oh, I couldn't say. I turned that off." (...)
Dean: "Why'd you flip the switch?"
Cas: "Because it's a direct link to Heaven. And I don't want anything to do with that place – not anymore."
Dean: "So what now? Move to Vermont, open up a charming B&B?"
Cas: "No. I still want – I still need to help people. So..." [smiles] "I'm gonna become a hunter."
Sam: "Really?"
Cas: "Yeah. I could be your third wheel."
Dean: "You know that's not a good thing, right?"
Cas: "Of course it is. A third wheel adds extra grip, greater stability. I even found a case. Oklahoma City – a man's heart jumped 10 feet out of his chest. It sounds like our kind of thing, right?"
Sam: "He's got a point."
Cas: "Excellent." [turns away] "I'll see you there."
Dean: "Wait, Cas, Cas! If you want to play cowboys and bloodsuckers, that's fine. But you're gonna stick with us, okay? None of this zapping around crap. Capiche?"
Cas: "Yeah, I capiche." 8.08
Dean: "Cas, you gonna book a room or what?"
Cas: "No, I'll stay here."
Dean: "Oh, okay. Yeah. We'll have a slumber party, braid Sam's hair. Where are you gonna sleep?"
Cas: "I don't sleep."
Dean: "Okay, well, I need my four hours, so..."
Cas: "I'll watch over you." 8.08
During that dialogue, Cas just going through Dean's stuff and Dean doesn't say anything about it, doesn't seem upset at the slightest. Cas is allowed to do this and also pick up, read, comment the journal at will.
Cas: "Your father... Beautiful handwriting."
Dean: "How you feeling, Cas?"
Cas: "I'm fine."
Dean: "Well, I just – I – I know that when... I got puked out of Purgatory, it took me a few weeks to... find my sea legs."
Cas: "I'm fine."
Dean: "Don't get me wrong. I'm – I'm happy you're back. I'm – I'm freaking thrilled. It's just this whole mysterious-resurrection thing – it always has one mother of a downside."
Cas [closes the journal]: "So, what do you want me to do?"
Dean: "Maybe take a trip upstairs."
Cas: "To Heaven?"
Dean: "Yeah, poke around, see if the God squad can't tell us how you got out."
Cas: "No."
Dean: "Look, man, I – I hate those flying-ass monkeys just as much as you do, but –"
Cas [forcefully]: "Dean! I said no!"
After a pause, Dean closes the laptop, walks over and sits on the edge of the other bed, facing Cas. Dean: "Talk to me."
Cas: "Dean, I... When I was... bad... and I had all those things – the... the leviathans... writhing inside me... I caused a lot of suffering on earth, but I devastated Heaven. I vaporized thousands of my own kind, and I – I – I can't go back."
Dean: "'Cause if you do, the angels will kill you."
Cas: "Because if I see what Heaven's become – what I –" [sighs] "what I made of it... I'm afraid I might kill myself." 8x08
Castiel tells Dean about his suicidal thoughts.
Dean [smiles]: "All right, well, let's blow this termite terrace. Cas, you get to ride shotgun. You done good."
Cas: "Thanks, but I, uh... I can't come. I, uh..."
Sam: "You – you what, Cas? W-why can't you come with us?"
Cas: "I, um... I want to stay with Mr. Jones. Someone should watch over him for a few days just to be safe."
Dean: "Okay, and then what?"
Cas: "Then I'm not sure. But I know I can't run anymore."
Dean is visibly sad about leaving Cas behind. 8.08

Cas: "Thank you... for everything you've done."

Dean to Cas: "You heard me, didn't you?"
Sam: "You pray to him?"
Cas: "Yes, I heard you." (...)
Dean: "Well, he puts the ass in Cas, huh? He hasn't been right since he got back from purgatory. We still don't know how he got out of there."
Sam: "I don't know, Dean, if he's so sketchy, then why were you praying to him?"
Cas: "You know, I can hear you both. I am a celestial being." 8.17
Cas: "I can reason with Dean. He's a good man."
Naomi: "Kill him."
Cas: "There has to be another way."
Naomi: "You have done this a thousand times, Castiel. You're ready. Kill him!" 8.17
How dead he is in his eyes after this thousand times... Like, how many times did he sob in the beginning while being forced to kill Dean over and over? And how many times did it take him before he began to go numb inside? Because that's what is visible in the scene in Heaven. Pain so profound, it literally destroyed him to the point he had to just ge completely numb inside. And yet, when the time came, he knew that before he was just killing copies. He couldn't kill the original. His love for this human being is greater than devine manipulation, than Naomi's brain washing torture, than trauma.

Cas to Naomi: "Please!"
Naomi: "End this, Castiel."
Dean: "Cas... This isn't you. This isn't you." [seriously beaten and bloody] "Cas... Cas..." [weakly, reaching towards Cas] "I know you're in there." [Cas raises his angel blade, ready to strike.] "I know you can hear me. Cas..." [Deans's voice breaks, pleading] "It's me." [Cas stands there, blade at the ready, light glints off the blade.] "We're family. We need you. I need you."
Naomi: "You have to choose, Castiel, us or them."
Dean: "Cas..." [Cas drops the blade with a clang. Dean groans and pants in pain.] "Cas?" [breathing heavily, he's horribly beaten] "Cas?" [Cas reaches his hand towards Dean.] "No. Cas. Cas!" [Dean thought Cas was finally going to kill him. So in what he thinks is going to be his last moments, he clutches onto Cas' arm. Cas places his hand on Dean's cheek, Dean gasps, and is suddenly healed.]
Cas: "I'm so sorry, Dean." 8.17
Apparently angels don't actually have to touch in order to heal. Thats just the way Cas chooses to do it with Dean.When Naomi forced Castiel to kill a legion of copies of Dean in Heaven, she assumed that Dean would beg for his own life. But she hadn't expected that he would beg for Castiels now that the time had come. Naomi's mistake was assuming Dean would beg for his own life and training Castiel to ignore that. The only begging Dean did was for Cas to be okay.
Jensen Ackles confirmed that the "I love you" to Cas was scripted in 8.17. It was in the script but Jensen "didn't feel Dean would come out and say it". Dean has only said "I love you" once on the show, and that was to his mother while she couldn't hear him. Never to Sam, never to Bobby, never to Lisa. But it's a fact that they were considering him saying that to Cas.
I need you is the way Dean says I love you. In a way this is even stronger than I love you. Love can be so transient, but need is all about essantial and compelling and I require you and you are necessary for me.
Dean: "So, this Naomi has been controlling you since she got you out of Purgatory?"
Cas: "Yeah."
Dean: "W-what broke the connection?"
Cas [glances away from Dean's eyes]: "I don't know." 8.17
Sam: "Are you okay? Cas dinged you up pretty good. And I just want to make sure you're okay."
Dean: "What? Like my feelings?"
Sam: "If that's what you want to talk about, sure." 8.18

Naomi: "Well, it is true that I have spoken with Castiel many times, trying to reach out to him, trying to help him. Dean, you must have noticed how Purgatory changed him. I mean, he's been unstable in the past, but I was shocked at how damaged he is now."
Dean: "Stop, okay? Don't – don't try to spin this. You think I don't know that you told him to try and kill me?"
Naomi: "That's my job – to protect heaven. I'm a warrior, just as you are. What would you expect? And now Castiel is in the wind with a hydrogen bomb in his pocket, and I – I'm scared, for all of us."
Dean: "Save it. See, I don't trust Angels, which means I don't trust you."
Naomi: "And yet you haven't warded this place against us. I know. You're hoping Castiel will return to you. I admire your loyalty. I only wish he felt the same way. I know you don't want to believe it, Dean, but we're on the same side – shutting the Gates of Hell, bringing Castiel in from the cold." 8.19
I only wish he felt the same way. Can you hear his heart break? This is everything Dean is affraid of, that his feelings are one-sided. That Cas doesn't actually care for him. Dean doesn't fight here. He can't. The sole thing he can do is hope she is wrong. But you can see that her words got him right in his weak spot.
Krissy: "Look, I hate how we were put together, but... I can't deny that it feels right. And why should I let Victor ruin that, too?"
Dean: "So, what you're saying is that you like that boy over there and you want to stay?"
Krissy: "What? Aiden? No. I mean... He's like my brother. It's nothing like that."
Dean: "Sure..." 8.18
Charlie: "What about, uh, Castiel? He seems helpful, and dreamy."
Dean: "He's MIA, with a tablet of his own, doing God knows what. I mean, to be honest this whole thing is... I mean, Sam's a tough son of a bitch, but... Cas is saying that these trials are messing with him in ways that even he can't heal." 8.20
Cas: "We were supposed to be their shepherds, not their murderers. (...) How— how many times have you torn into my head and washed it clean?"
Naomi: "Frankly? Too damn many. You're the famous spanner in the works. Honestly, I think you came off the line with a crack in your chassis. You have never done what you were told. Not completely. You don't even die right, do you? Where is the angel tablet, Castiel?"
Cas: "In the words of a... good friend... bite me." 8.21
Dean: "I'll make a run."
Cas: "Dean, I can go with you." [a few seconds pass before speaking again] "Dean... I'm sorry."
Dean: "For what?"
Cas: "I... For everything."
Dean: "Everything? Like, uh... like ignoring us?"
Cas: "Yes."
Dean: "Or like bolting off with the Angel Tablet, then losing it... 'cause you didn't trust me? You didn't trust me."
Cas: "Yes."
Dean: "Yeah. Nah, that's not gonna cut it. Not this time. So you can take your little apology and you cram it up your ass."
Cas: "Dean... I thought I was doing the right thing."
Dean: "Yeah, you always do." (...)
Sam: "Dude, go easy on Cas, okay. He's one of the good guys."
Dean: "Dude, if anybody else – I mean anybody – pulled that kind of crap, I would stab them in their neck on principle. Why should I give him a free pass?"
Sam: "Because it's Cas." 8.22
Dean: "All right. Let's roll." [Cas stands up] "Not you."
Cas: "Sam is more damaged than I am."
Dean: "Yeah, well, you know, even banged up, Sammy comes through."
Cas: "Dean, I just want to help."
Dean: "We don't need your help. Just stay here and – and get better." 8.22

Cas is beyond pissed, he isn't just angry here. Seeing Naomi, he's vengeful. She tortured him, chased him, messed with his head, had him kill Samandiriel, almost made him kill Dean (after having him kill one thousand facsimiles). She violated him. Castiel is an angel. Literally one of the most powerful beings in creation. He is capable of killing with a touch, doesn't even have to touch to kill if he really doesn't want to. Dean is holding him back with one hand. Dean, human, weak, fragile, smite-able Dean is holding Castiel back with one touch. Castiel is letting Dean hold him back from the one angel whom he has the most motivation and, some would say, right to kill. Cas gives up his revenge for Dean.
Dean [looks up to the sky and sees angels falling] : "No, Cas..." 8.23
