"I know you think that I'm pissed at you, but I don't care that the angels fell. So whatever you did or didn't do, it doesn't matter, okay? We'll work it out. Please, man, I need you here." Dean praying to Castiel 9.01
Angel: "If you lie to me, Dean Winchester, I will rip your throat out. Where is Castiel?"
Dean: "Who's asking?"
Angel [slams Dean against the Impala's trunk twice and raises the angel knife]: "Try every angel who was ejected from their home."
Dean: "Oh. Oh, well, in that case, I have no clue." 9.01
Dean actualy does not know where Cas is, yet he still makes the angel think he does know. Dean is protecting Cas. Distracting the angels from hunting Cas by provoking them into torturing Dean for answers, even though he doesn't have any. Although Dean thinks that Castiel is still a powerful angel, he feels the need to protect Cas and tries to divert the danger to himself, a fragile human.
Cas [on phone]: "Metatron tricked me. It wasn't angel trials, it was a spell. I wanted you to know that."
Dean: "Have you heard my prayers? I've been praying to you all night."
Cas: "Dean, Metatron – he – he took my grace."
Dean: "What?"
Cas: "Don't worry about me. What are you doing for Sam?"
Dean: "Uh, everything I can. There's actually another angel in there working on him right now."
Cas: "What other angel?"
Dean: "Um, his name is Ezekiel. He's cool. I mean, I think he is."
Cas: "He should be able to help until I get there."
Dean: "Wait, no, no, no. No, hey, that's not an option."
Cas: "It might be a few days, but –"
Dean: "Hey, Cas, listen to me. There are angels out there, okay? And they – they're looking for you, and they're pissed."
Cas: "Not all of them, Dean. Some are just looking for direction. Some are just lost."
Dean: "No, Cas, I know you want to help, okay? I do, but... Now, I'm begging you, for once, look out for yourself. Until we figure out what the hell is going on, trust nobody."
Cas: "And do what? Just abandon them all?"
Dean: "Damn it, Cas. You hearing yourself? There's a war on, and it's on you. There's thousands of them out there... You said you lost your grace, right? That means you're human. That means you bleed and you eat and you sleep and all the things you never had to worry about before."
Cas: "I'm fine, Dean." [Cas hears rumbling sounds through the phone.] "What's going on?"
Dean: "I think we got more company. Look, get your ass to the bunker alone. You hear me?"
Cas: "Dean..."
Dean: "Go, Cas!"
Cas: "Dean!" 9.01
The first thing they do (after a catastrophe) is try to find each other. Cas' priority was to explain himself to Dean. His first instinct was to hope Dean understands. He cares more about what Dean thinks of him than what his brethren may assume of him. (He didn't even bother explaining to Heal what happened.) And Dean just knows that Cas just wants his understanding and acceptance so he gave him that (as he prayed to him).
Sam: "Why do you look so worried?"
Dean: "Let's see. There's Cas, who I told to haul ass here. That was days ago. He's still out there. (...)"
Ezekiel: "I have news. I've picked up chatter among the angels. Not all are wandering around in confusion."
Dean: "Yeah, some of 'em are after Cas."
Ezekiel: "There is a faction that is rapidly organizing and finding human vessels to contain them. It is this faction's leadership who want Castiel found. You see, Dean, I can be useful." (...)
Ezekiel switches back to Sam: "I mean, you know, Cas is human now. It's gonna take him a lot longer to travel."
Dean: "I'm gonna get whiplash. Um, all right, so, I was thinking that if the angels are organizing, then that makes them a lot more dangerous than we thought. (...) My point is, is that the more of them that are after Cas, the worse it is, so... we gotta find him." 9.03
Dean to homeless men: "We just need to find a friend who's in it deep. (...) Uh, he's- he's got dark hair, blue eyes, a little out of it."
Sam: "He maybe called himself Clarence?" 9.03
Dean: "Cas? Cas? Cas!" [takes Cas' face in his hands, but Cas is cold and unmoving, Dean's voice breaks] "Cas! No." [silences in shock] "Sammy, he's gone..."
[Ezekiel in Sam's body heals Cas, then stumbles backwards weakened, slumps back to the floor, unconscious again. Dean goes to help Sam but stops and turns when Cas speaks.]
Cas: "Dean."
Dean: "Hey. Hey! Yeah."
Sam [evidently shocked by the scene he's woken up to]: "Cas. You're okay."
Dean to Castiel: "Never do that again!"
Cas: "All right. But I'm confused. I know she stabbed me, but I'm – well, I don't appear to be dead."
Dean: "Uh, you... I made a deal with her. Said she wouldn't get kabobed if she brought you back. She brought you back."
Cas: "You lied."
Dean: "I did." 9.03
Because Dean cannot reveal that Sam has an angel in him, he lies to Castiel about his survival: He promised April that he would spare her if she would heal Cas. So Dean is lying to have lied. We remember: "When humans want something really really bad... we lie." Castiel has not forgotten.
Cas [enters, wearing fresh clothes and looking clean for the first time in a while]: "I am really enjoying this place. Plentiful food. Good water pressure. Things I never even considered before. There really is a lot to being human, isn't there?"
Dean: "It ain't all just burritos and strippers, my friend."
Cas: "Yeah. I understand what you're saying. Yes, there's more to humanity than survival. You... look for purpose, and you must not be defeated by anger or despair. Or hedonism, for that matter."
Dean: "Where does hedonism come into it?"
Cas: "Well, my time with April was very educational."
Sam: "Yeah. I mean, I would think that getting killed is something."
Cas: "And having sex."
Dean [chokes on his burrito for a second]: "You had sex with April?"
(Sam looks at Cas like: You stupid idiot, why did you have to tell him? You're soo in trouble. And Dean is like: I should have killed her slowly. You better have thought about me the entire time. *don't let him see how much it kills you inside*)
Sam: "Yeah, that would be where the hedonism comes in."
Dean: "Shh." [Cas and Sam nod awkwardly to each other.] "So... did you have protection?"
Cas: "I had my angel blade."
Dean: "Oh – oh, he had the Angel blade."
Cas: "In any event, I – I do now see how difficult life can be and how well you two have led it. And I think you'll be great teachers."
Dean: "Thanks, Cas."
Cas: "Are there any more burritos?"
Dean: "Uh, yes." [points towards the kitchen and Cas walks away] "Our little Cas. He gave it up to a reaper. That is -" 9.03
Ezekiel in Sam: "Castiel cannot stay here. He will bring the angels down on all of us."
Dean: "No, no, he's got the Enochian tattoo. He's warded."
Ezekiel: "He was warded when April found him, and she killed him."
Dean: "Yes, and you brought him back, and I thank you for that, but this is Cas, okay, who vouched for you when I didn't know you from Jack. The bunker is safe."
Ezekiel: "We cannot stand an incursion. Castiel is in danger, and if he is here, I am in danger."
Dean: "Wait, in danger? From who, the angels?"
Ezekiel: "If he stays, I am afraid I will have no choice but to leave."
Dean: "Oh, no, you can't do that. Sam's not well enough. If you leave his body..."
Ezekiel: "I know. I am sorry." 9.03
Dean: "Cas, uh, can we talk?"
Cas: "Of course." [pulls out a chair for Dean] "Dean, you know I always appreciate our talks, our time together."
Dean: "Listen, buddy. Um... You can't stay."
[Cas just looks at him, confused and hurt.] 9.03
"Can't you see? I'm poison. People get close to me, they get killed... or worse. You know, I tell myself that I-I... I help more people than I hurt. And I tell myself that I'm... I'm doing it all for the right reasons, and I... I believe that. But I can't... I won't... drag anybody through the muck with me. Not anymore." Dean to Sam
"Look, nobody wants him here more than I do, okay?" Dean about Cas
Dean's phone rings. Dean mutters: "There is a God." [as he sees that's Cas who's calling]
Sam watches Dean as he answers the phone.
Cas [calling from the Gas'n'Sip]: "I may have a case for you. Four missing in Rexford, Idaho." [Dean stands up, walking away from Sam and Kevin.] "Presumed dead, but no bodies have been released to loved ones. And, there were reports of a strange substance at the scenes."
Dean: "Oh, well, hello to you too, Cas. How are you?"
Cas: "I ... am busy."
Dean [shakes his head]: "All right. So, how do you want to do this? You want to meet up at the latest scene? You want me to pick you up? What?" [looks puzzled]
Cas: "Um ... I've got my hands full over here. I just – um..."
Dean: "Cas? Hello?"
Cas: "...thought you would want to know about the case."
Dean: "Hey, you sure everything's –" [hears the click and looks at the phone] "O-kay..." 9.06
Sam: "So, he said nothing about where he is or - or what he's been doing?"
Dean: "This is Cas. In case you forgot, he's not exactly Chatty Cathy."
Sam [incredulously]: "And you're not even gonna see him when you're in Idaho?"
Dean: "Well, like I said, as long as he's catnip for angels, he's keeping his distance." [turns to continue walking, now leaving the room]
Sam: "So then, what's the point, Dean?" [walks over to Kevin, they're both looking up at Dean as he has walked upstairs] "I mean, it's barely even a case."
Dean [from the balcony, talking down to the other two]: "That's why I'm just gonna go have a little look-see, and... we're not gonna waste a whole lot of manpower on a big pile of nada."
Kevin: "In other words, a perfect excuse to bail out on research."
Dean [brief pause]: "You got me." [turns and walks out] 9.06
Cas: "What are you doing here?"
Dean: "Gee, it's nice to see you, too, Cas."
Cas: "Uh, you know you surprised me."
Dean: "Well, the feeling is mutual. I mean, I knew you had to lay low from the angel threat, but, uh, wow. This is some cover."
Cas: "My Grace is gone. What did you expect? Do you have any idea how hard it was? When I fell to earth, I didn't just lose my powers. I lost -" [looks at Dean] "I had nothing." 9.06
Dean: "This is not you, man. You are above this. Come on."
Cas: "No, Dean." [turns to face Dean] "I'm not. I failed at being an angel. Everything I ever attempted came out wrong. But here ... at least I have a shot at getting things right." 9.06
Dean has always held Cas up on pedestal. Which is why it hurt so badly when Cas betrayed him in Season 6. And while their relationship has definitely gone through a few loops since then, there's still this part of Dean that holds onto the wonder that is Cas. That's why he always gets so upset whenever Cas screws up. Dean's always held Cas in such high regard that any little screw up seems monumental. So now here is Cas, as human as can be. He literally has no powers. As he himself says earlier in this scene, he has nothing. He is no longer this all powerful thing that can come in and save the day. Yet Dean is still here singing his praises.
Cas: "I wouldn't be much use. I don't have my powers."
Dean: "So? I've never had powers."
Cas: "You are a hunter."
Dean: "And you are a hunter in training, remember?" 9.06
Dean: "You're scared."
Cas: "It's different now, Dean. Everything feels different."
Dean: "You're right. All right, I'll track down this, uh, Kevorkian wannabe, and I'll put him down. You stay safe. Go on that date, all right? Go live a normal life." 9.06
Dean drove Cas to the woman's house. Cas starts to open the car door to get out.
Dean: "Cas. Wait." [sighs] "I can't let you do this."
Cas: "What?"
Dean [gazes at Cas, hesitating]: "You're gonna wear that, on a date?"
Cas [looking down at his clothes]: "This is all I have, Dean."
Dean: " Okay. Uh, lose the vest."
Cas: "What are you –"
Dean: "Lose the vest, come on." [Cas takes the vest off and hands it to Dean, who tosses it into the back seat.] "That's a little better. All right. There we go. All right." [Dean looks at Cas appraisingly.] "And do the buttons – why don't you unbutton it?" [Cas starts unbuttoning his shirt and Dean is literally checking Cas out. ] "Okay. Th- that's far enough, Tony Manero. " [Dean laughs a little, then gives Cas a once-over.] "Yeah. Good. All right. Listen to me. Always open the door for her, okay? Ask a lot of questions. And, uh... Oh, if she says she's happy to go Dutch... she's lying. All right?" [Cas nods. Dean touches Cas on the chest.] "Go get 'em, tiger."
Cas gets out of the car, and starts walking to the front gate. He turns around and looks nervously at Dean, who gives him a thumbs up from the car. Cas returns the thumbs up geekily and opens the gate. He sighs nervously and walks to the front door, stopping to pick a rose from the front garden. After he stabs himself on a thorn, he whips out a pair of large clippers that he apparently carries on his person.
Dean [watching]: "Nice touch."
Cas partly turns back towards Dean and waves him to leave. Dean waves back, then, realizing that Cas wants him to leave. 9.06
(But after that Cas always wears his shirt unbuttoned at the top.)
"Without any idea why any of it feels the way it feels, or why this confusion, which feels like it's... a hair's breadth from terror or pain. You know, just when you think you do understand, it'll turn out you're wrong. You didn't understand anything at all. You know, it wasn't that long ago when all I'd need to do to ease your pain was touch you." Cas 9.06
Ephraim (a Rit Zien angel): "You remember my name? I was just a nobody when we met, but you - you were a legend. You've been here before. This is my first time, and it's... intense."
Cas: " You know, there's a lot you don't understand about humanity at first. If you would just stop -"
Ephraim: "Stop? I won't stop... until I wash the planet clean of all suffering."
The baby starts fussing again. Ephraim steps towards her. Cas [standing in his way]: "Don't. Touch. Her."
Ephraim: "You think I came for her? No, Castiel. I came for you. So much pain and despair, so many voices begging out for relief."
Cas: "How'd you find me?"
Ephraim: "Because you're warded? The same way I find all my patients. I just followed the sound of your pain. You have no idea how loud it is. I could hear you for miles." (...) "Shh-shh-shhh. It'll be over soon. I'll take the pain away."
Cas: "I want to live."
Ephraim: "But as what, Castiel? As an angel? Or a man?" [Crashing sound, Dean rushes in, a knife in hand. Ephraim gestures and Dean goes flying into the corner.] "You say you want to live. But you can't see what I see. By choosing a human life, you've already given up. You chose... death. " 9.06
No, he chose Dean, and he always will.
Dean: "Listen, Cas ... Back at the bunker, I, uh... Sorry I told you to go. I know it's been hard on you, you know, on your own. Well, you're adapting. I'm proud of you."
Cas: "Thank you, Dean." [sighs] "But there's something Ephraim said. The angels - they need help. Shouldn't I be searching for a way to get them home?"
Dean: "Me and Sam will take care of the angels. You're human now. It's not your problem anymore."
Cas gets out of the car, leans in through the window at Dean, and they wave goodbye to each other. Cas walks to the Gas'n'Sip and unlocks the door as Dean starts up the Impala. Cas goes to look out the window, moodily. 9.06
