I love this movie! How could you possibly go wrong with a movie about Abraham Lincoln? You just can't go wrong when Daniel Day-Lewis plays America's beloved 16th President. And you can't go wrong with Sally Field portraying Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis won his third Oscar for Best Actor for his phenomenal performance in this film.
Day-Lewis gives a performance that depicts Lincoln as complex. He portrays arguably the best and most revered President America has ever had as we knew him to be: intelligent, principled, kind, compassionate, steadfast, gracious, courageous, and very patient. But this film also goes to show how politically shrewd and savvy he was. The movie also goes to show that even with the weight of the Presidency on his shoulders and during the bloodiest conflict in American history, Lincoln was a devoted family man. In a pivotal scene in the film when the House of Representatives is voting on the 13th Amendment, Abe Lincoln is not shown pacing in the Oval Office. He is spending time with his youngest son, Tad.
Sally Field is marvelous as Mrs. Lincoln who is traumatized but also struggles to put on a brave face and supports her husband.
Also, it has an educational element. It is excellent for showing students how the elegant yet flawed American Democratic process works.
This movie is a worthy tribute to the best and most beloved President that the USA has ever had.
I highly recommend this wonderful film.
