When the trap-layer entered Andromeda, nobody realized the danger.
One day, a traveler from beyond the mountains came. And since the titans could not see the future, they thought he was one of the many looking for shelter in the lightreach.
His name was Auriga and he was another human. Like Indus, he was a great hunter and after being granted permission to stay, he started laying out traps and caught many animals.
Now an argument began about man's place in the network of creatures. Many animals complained that the trap-layer wasn't hunting fairly. He managed to hunt faster and stronger animals with his traps, and so he joined wolves and bears in their rank as apex predators, although he was much slower and weaker.
But worse even: The trap-layer was wearing the pelt of animals he hunted, in which their souls were trapped. Thus imprisoned they had to serve him instead of returning to life.
"It can't go on like this", the deers and the rabbits and the foxes cried. When the trap-layer began to even hunt wolves and bears, the animals went to Lupus.
The First Wolf called a meeting in the Alkeswood. All three humans had to come: Bootes, servant of the bear-sisters, Indus, the silent hunter, and Auriga, the trap-layer.
Now the animals gathered and discussed the matter. The humans challenged them because they were so different. With bears, you could always be sure they would be strong, and with rabbits, you knew they were all nimble, but humans weren't so easily categorized.
There was Bootes, the bear-keeper. He was a loyal servant of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, a good friend of Kornephorus, and had proven his big heart by saving the hunting dogs. If all humans were like him, they would be trustworthy at the titan's side and spread empathy.
Indus on the other hand had stayed a hunter. He followed his prey on foot, using simple tools. He fit into the network of hunter and prey, a weak hunter that could be bested by bears and wolves. If all humans were like him, they wouldn't be noteworthy in this place.
But now Auriga had appeared. he was sly like a fox and could use tools to conquer every weakness. The trap-layers' power was scary and all animals urged Lupus to ban traps. If all humans were like him, maybe, just maybe Lupus would have chased them from Andromeda because he had sensed the danger.
But the court decided differently. Because what judgment would be felled for Auriga, would also affect Bootes and Indus, and every other human of lightreach, for judgment always was for all creatures of a kind.
Finally, Lynx said that he could not make this decision. Corvus said Auriga had to give up the traps. Since they couldn't take his knowledge, he and all humans were forbidden to hunt and kill animals by using traps. Bootes and Indus had to accept this judgment as well. Especially Indus had caught many birds with simple traps and felt mistreated since he had never made too much prey. But he concealed his anger and so the darkness inside him could grow unseen.
Auriga, however, started to look for loopholes. Now he caught the animals alive and kept them imprisoned, to kill them later or to live from their eggs and milk. Instead of deadly traps, he build houses and fences, carts, and yokes; and he started to change the land and get vegetables from it to not be dependent of hunting anymore.
Less animals fell victim to him, and so his doing was tolerated. For Lupus wanted all creatures of Andromeda to live freely and in peace.
Well, even such powerful beings like the titans can make mistakes. They were no different than every wolf, they could misjudge something. They didn't know yet of the nature of humans - that they were not all driven by the same instincts - and could not find a common treatment of all three. Bootes of all people is who I have to make responsible for the fact, that Indus and Auriga could stay in the realm of light, and my heart is heavy to put this blame on the great hero, the bear-keeper. Let this be a lesson to us all that even the Greatest can unintentionally bring about new darkness.
