"I still have that badge you gave me." Cas to Dean 9.09
Since 5.03 Cas has been blown to bits and then restored, he spent one year apart from Dean, one year fighting a civil war whilst rescuing Dean every time he fucked up, one year being God, Leviathan, Emanuel and Crazy!Cas, one year in Purgatory, then falling from Heaven and leaving his trenchcoat in a laundromat, but he still has that fake FBI badge Dean gave him.
Sam, Cas and Dean are at a bar table, having a beer.
Cas: "It is so good being together again. You know, this is my first beer as a human. I hope it's okay, me joining you?"
Sam: "Why wouldn't it be okay?"
Dean [looks alarmed at this turn of the conversation]: "You know, Cas, are you sure you're ready to jump back into all this? I mean, it seemed to me like you'd actually found some peace."
Cas: "Hey, you once told me that you don't choose what you do. It chooses you. I'm a part of this." [clinks beer bottles with Dean] "Like it or not."
Sam: "All right, well, then, in that case, we figure out, uh..." (...)
Cas: "That's according to April."
Dean: "The reaper you banged."
Cas: "Yeah, and you stabbed."
Dean: "Yeah." [awkward pause] "She was hot."
Cas: "And very nice. Up to the point she started torturing me."
Dean: "Yeah. Well, not every hookup's perfect." [pats Cas' arm conversantly]
Sam [smiling at the exchange]: "All right. I'm gonna get us another round." [wants to leave Dean and Cas alone with eachother]
Cas: "Nah. I'll get it." [hops off his bar stool, then returns, swigging the last of his old beer, and setting the bottle on the table] "You know, I've never done this before."
Dean [sighs]: "One beer, he's hammered."
Blue light flashes in Sam's eyes, Ezekiel is back. Dean [knowing he's about to get more grief from Ezekiel]: "Oh, boy."
Ezekiel in Sam: "Well? What are you going to do about this?"
Dean: "About Cas?"
Ezekiel: "He is a beacon, Dean, pulling every angel for miles down on our heads."
Dean: "All right, you know what, Zeke? Level with me. What is it that you're so afraid of?"
Ezekiel: "I told you. When I chose to answer your prayers and heal Sam, I chose sides. That means I'm not in good standing with certain angels."
Dean: "Okay, well, you know what? Cas isn't in good standing with any angel, all right? But here he is, ass on the line, fighting the fight."
Cas [returning]: "Here we go. Three brewskies."
Ezekiel [pissily]: "I'm going to get something out of the car." 9.09
Cas [clears throat]: "I, um, I noticed you look... kind of uncomfortable whenever Sam mentions my leaving. Doesn't he know that you told me to leave?"
Dean [looks down, avoiding Cas' eyes]: "Look, I got to do anything I can to get him back. Now, if that means that we keep our distance from you for a little while, then... then I don't have a choice. I don't feel good about it, but I don't have a choice. It's great to have your help, Cas. But we just can't be together."
[Cas looks sad.] 9.09
Cas [on the phone]: "Dean, I don't have a lot of time, so listen. The leader of the opposition is an angel named Malachi. He had me. I, uh, I was tortured. But I got away. I... I did what I had to. I became what they've become. A barbarian."
Dean: "What are you – Cas, where are you?"
Cas: "It's better I stay away. They're gonna want me even more now. But I'm gonna be all right. I... I got my Grace back. Well, not mine per se, but it'll do."
Dean: "Wait, you're – you're back? You got your mojo?"
Cas: "I'm not sure. But I am an angel."
Dean: "And you're okay with that?"
Cas: "If we're going to war, I need to be ready."
Dean [pause]: "Cas..." 9.09
"We believe in Castiel... and you." Gadreel to Dean
Dean [looks up to see Cas standing there]: "Cas. Now, look at you, all suited up and back in the game."
(Although Dean mourns Kevin, he smiles the second he sees Cas. Besides, only Dean's compliments seem to have an effect on Cas. Woman: "Cool jacket." Cas: "Actually it's quite warm.")
Cas: "I, um... I came as soon as you called. I wa-" [stops, is immediately concerned for his friend] "Dean, what happened? What's wrong?"
Dean stops his packing and his face melts in emotion as he looks to his friend. They sit down at the table and Dean tells Cas the long hurtful story. 9.10
Dean: "God, I was so damn stupid."
Cas: "You were stupid for the right reasons."
Dean: "Yeah, like that matters."
Cas: "Sometimes that's all that matters." 9.10
Dean: "I can't watch that anymore."
Cas: "I understand. It's not Sam, but... It's still Sam."
Dean [voice cracking with emotion]: "Pretty much, yeah. How are you doing?"
Cas [kind of surprised]: "You want to talk about me now?"
Dean: "I want to talk about anything that's not a demon sticking needles into my brother's brain." [Dean looks out a window trying to control his emotions but tears are pooling in his eyes] "Yeah, humor me, man. How you doing?"
Cas: "Uh... I'm okay."
Dean: "Good. Good. That's, uh... So, what, you just change the batteries out, power back up? It's that easy?"
Cas: "It wasn't easy, but I didn't have a choice."
Dean: "Yeah. Well, that's usually how it goes. Cas... I'm sorry."
Cas: "About what?"
Dean: "Kickin' you out of the bunker. That's, uh... You know, not telling you about Sam."
Cas: "You thought his life was at stake."
Dean: "Yeah, I got played."
Cas: "I thought I was saving Heaven. I got played, too."
Dean [with a weak smile]: "So you're saying we're both a couple of dumbasses?"
Cas [gently smiling back]: "I prefer the word trusting. Less dumb, less ass." 9.10
That just leaves... a couple.
Cain: "I did horrible things - for centuries."
Dean: "Then you met Colette..."
Cain: "She knew who I was... and what I was. She loved me unconditionally. She forgave me. She only asked for one thing. To stop." 9.11
There was a lot of character development for Dean in 9.12. At the beginning he couldn’t believe Garth had found a family and a person to love who loved him back. But at the end, he said:
"Who cares where happiness comes from? Look, we're all a little weird, we're all a little wacky - some more than others. But if it works, it works. You got something here. Don't let that go. You'll never forgive yourself." Dean to Garth 9.12
Dean expressed his “we’re all weird, some more than others” idea in an episode where he said letting happiness go was a reason to not forgive himself. I get the feeling that Dean said that from experience. Season 9 showed us that Dean had to let Cas go three times (9.03, 9.06, and 9.09) or that three times could sound like a pattern. 9.07 paralleled Dean’s relationship with Robin, his romantic love interest, (that Dean chose Sam over her) to his relationship with Castiel (that he chose Sam over Cas). And then Dean had to leave again in 9.10.
Dean: "I called Cas. (...) He said he couldn't talk about it over the phone."
Sam: "Why?"
Dean [with a fond look in his eyes]: "Because he is a weird guy, okay? He's a weird, dorky, little guy." about Cas 9.22

Cas [trying to call Dean, reaching the mailbox]: "Dean, it's me. I'm..."
Gabriel [snatching the phone from Cas' hand]: "Hey, what's up, shorty? Remember me, the guy who died for your sins? No, not the cat with the beard and sandals... the hot one. Any old how, your boy toy and I are rolling our way towards your top-secret domicile." 9.18
Dean: "You sure you're alright?"
Cas: "Yes... Are you? There's something different about you."
Dean [pats Cas on the shoulder]: "I'm fine."
Cas [grabs Deans arm and pushes up his sleeve revealing the Mark of Cain, stares at Dean]: "What have you done? Damn it, Dean..." 9.18
He's not even holding Dean's wrist. Cas' hand is literally cupped around the back of Dean's, his fingers are curled into his palm. Don't tell me that's not intimate.
Cas: "Hold on. These are my people. I can help."
Dean: "Well, that's sort of the problem. So just... hang back."
Cas: "So I should just sit here?"
Dean: "Pretty much."
Cas: "No. If you don't want my help, then I will follow Josiah's trail to Colorado. I have to do something, Dean."
Dean: "All right, fine. But Sam's coming with you."
Sam: "What?"
Cas to Dean: "Because you don't trust me?"
Dean: "To help." 9.22
Tessa: "I was too weak. Till Castiel gave me a reason to die."
Dean: "Yeah. See, that just doesn't sound like the Cas I know."
Tessa: "But doesn't it, though? And the Cas you know, would he raise an army of angels without telling you? 'Cause this Cas did. I'll tell you a secret. There's more..." 9.22
Hannah: "We need proof."
Cas: "Name it."
Hannah [pointing to Dean]: "Punish him. He murdered Tessa. He broke our rules. You gave us order, Castiel, and we gave you our trust. Don't lose it over one man." [hands a blade to Cas] "This is justice."
Cas: "No. I can't."
Hannah: "Goodbye, Castiel." 9.22

Dean: "No, you're not. How long you got?"
Cas: "Long enough to destroy Metatron, I hope. But without an army..."
Dean: "Well, hey, you still got us."
Cas: "Dean. Those bombers... You don't really think that I -"
Dean: "Cas, you just gave up an entire army for one guy. No, there's no way that you blew those people away."
Cas: "You really believe we three will be enough?"
Dean: "We always have been." 9.22

"And the Angel tablet, arguably the most powerful instrument in the history of the universe, is in pieces, and for what again? Oh, that's right, to save Dean Winchester, that was your goal, right? I mean, you drape yourself in the flag of Heaven. But ultimately, it was all about saving one human, right? Well, guess what. He's dead, too." Metatron to Cas 9.23
"And your Grace? What will you do about that? You will die if you don't replenish it." Hannah to Castiel [Cas' face reveals he has no intent in doing so. He lost his will to live.] 9.23
