Amara to Casifer: "I think you and I need to have a nice long chat."
Dean [yelling]: "Cas?"
Amara turns to look at Dean in disbelief. 11.18
Amara finally saw it. All that longing and pain and desperation... None of it is for her. She can warp Dean's mind, but she'll never have his heart. He's already given it to the angel in the dirty trenchcoat. The darkness has no power over Dean when someone he loves is in danger. Despite what 'bonds' Dean has, the one he has with Cas is the strongest one, and nothing can get in the way of it, not even God's sister. This is a profound bond so strong and deep and more effective than that of a primordial entity that is the Darkness itself that Dean got over it completely to call out to the one person he cares about the most aside from his brother.
As Lucifer gauges the situation, he looks utterly confused. Dean told Lucifer of his connection to Amara and the effect she had on him. So here Amara is. Lucifer was probably waiting for Dean to be overcome and completely in her thrall. But imagine his surprise when Amara, the thing that is supposed to have this overwhelming desire and control over Dean, is standing right in front of Dean and all Dean does is calling out for Cas.
Amara said Dean's heart was "cloaked in shame" because she saw who was in it: Castiel.
Dean sighs. Sam: "Listen, um... I know I came down on the side of wanting Cas to deal with Amara, so..."
Dean: "Well, that's what he wanted, though, right? Besides, didn't we say that we were gonna swear off getting in the way when one person makes a choice the other doesn't agree with?"
Sam: "Yeah, um... Yeah, we did say that. So... Okay. So, that's our policy."
Dean: "Which sounds damn good. Well, let's go find that idiot and bring him home." 11.18
To Dean, Cas' home is with him.
Dean: "Ah, you guys fight just like brothers, almost as bad as us."
Cesar: "Well... it's more like an old married couple."
Dean [laughs]: "That's..." [looks to Cesar with realisation] "Oh, so..." [points back and forth to Jesse and Cesar]
Cesar: "Yeah."
Dean: "Okay, that's... What's it like, settling down with a hunter?"
Cesar: "Smelly, dirty." [turns to Jesse] "Twice the worrying about getting ganked." 11.19
Amara to Dean in a vision: "Lucifer, his favorite, isn't doing so well." [Casifer appears, tortured and beaten] "To say nothing of the vessel, your friend Castiel. By choosing to ignore me, my brother is allowing this to happen. These and... other things. I thought you should know." 11.21
Dean: "There can be no us."
Amara: "This place, this world hasn't been especially easy for you. Why not at least consider my offer?"
Dean: "This world is flawed. I will give you that. But I am not ready to say goodbye to it just yet."
Amara: "But one way or the other, you will. It's inevitable. My brother won't stop me again, because he can't. Dean, give up your... smallness, your humanity and become boundless within me. (...) Why fight it? What you're feeling is that I am the end of your struggle. Something stops you. Keeps you from having it all." [Dean closes eyes, tries to turn away from her] "Where are your thoughts? Something's different." 11.21
Dean kneels down next to Cas and puts a hand on his shoulder. Cas stirs and looks up at Dean.
Cas: "Dean."
Dean: "Cas? Hey, is that you?"
Cas: "Lucifer is gone. Amara ripped him from my body."
Dean [helping Cas up]: "Come on. (...) Cas is back." 11.23
Dean: "How you doing? You good? I mean, you know, the whole Lucifer thing."
Cas: "I was just... so stupid."
Dean: "No, no, no. It wasn't stupid. You were right. You were right to let Lucifer ride shotgun. Me and Sam wouldn't have done that."
Cas: "Well, it didn't work."
Dean: "No, but it was our best shot, and you stepped up."
Cas: "I was just trying to help."
Dean: "Well, and you do help, Cas."
Cas: "You know, I -"
Dean: "You know, sometimes me and Sam have got so much going on that... we forget about everyone else."
Cas: "Well, you do live exciting lifes."
Dean: "Yeah, that's one word for it. But you're always there, you know?" [Dean looks over at Cas] "You're the best friend we've ever had. You're our brother, Cas. I want you to know that."
Cas [sad]: "Thank you." 11.23
Marking someone as part of their family is the greatest compliment Dean can give. Dean calling him his brother is his way saying 'I love you' without coming out. Dean is so utterly afraid of admitting he loves Cas or even realizing it that he just keeps calling Cas his brother. That's the strongest bond he's ever had with another person after all. So he equivocates the emotions he has for Cas as brotherly because John f'ed him up and he doesn't understand that it's possible to have romantic feelings for another man.
- "Never ended well for the siblings. The strain of working together, or maybe just being around each other all their lives. Those two were the exception, actually – the Campbells. Got along famously. Of course, that was just a stage name. They weren't actually brothers. That was a cover for their, um... alternative lifestyle." museum guide to Dean 7.07
Cas: "Well, what about souls? They are living batteries. They're full of energy. They're full of light. Each one is as powerful as... 100 suns?"
Rowena: "H-He's not wrong."
Dean: "Okay, so if we got this kind of juice, then what?"
Rowena: "You get me enough souls... I can build a bomb."
Dean: "Would that do the trick?"
Chuck: "Uh...maybe."
Dean: "Okay. How many souls are we talking here?"
Rowena: "The more the better."
Crowley: "Even if you could get that kind of firepower... (...) This is desperate... and stupid."
Dean: "Well, desperate and stupid's pretty much all we got right now, so... (...) We're collecting souls to build a bomb to blow the Darkness to hell." 11.23
Cas: "So, what now?"
Dean: "Well, now we have the bomb, so we just got to find Amara."
Cas: "We need somebody to get close to her, someone with a... personal connection." [Everyone looks towards Dean.]
Dean: "Well, what are we waiting for? How do I smuggle this thing?"
Crowley: " We could always shove it up your -"
Dean: "Hey."
Crowley: "I mean, you could."
Rowena: "You won't carry the bomb. You'll be the bomb. I'm gonna take what's in there...and put it in here." [places her hand on Dean's chest] "Once you get close to her, you press your fingers together like so - boom." [Cas looks distressed.]
Dean: "Okay."
Rowena is saying an incantation over the bomb which is in her outstretched hand. As she finishes she pushes her other hand towards the bomb and Dean. A stream of bright, white light hits Dean in the chest for several seconds. Dean groans and hunches over in pain.
Cas: "Dean, are you okay? How do you feel?"
Dean: "Like my insides just got flame-broiled. Is that normal?"
Rowena: "Sweetie, we're so far past normal. You've got about an hour, maybe a wee bit more, then you're literally a walking ticking time bomb." 11.23
Sam: "Dean, you know, you don't have to do this."
Dean: "'Course I do. I just have to get close. I can do that, okay? I can do that."
Sam: "You know, if this works, um, that bomb goes off."
Dean [turns and pats Sam on the shoulder as he walks away]: "I know."
Cas: "Dean."
Dean: "Cas." [Cas approaches Dean and hugs him. Dean accepts the hug good-naturedly but then looks sad.] "Okay. Okay. All right."
Cas: "I could go with you."
Dean: "No, no, no. No, I got to do this alone. Listen, if - when - when this works, Sam - he's gonna be a mess. So look out for him, okay? Make sure he doesn't do anything stupid."
Cas: "Of course."
Dean [places his hand on Cas' shoulder]: "Thank you for everything." 11.23
Dean is usually the one pulling someone into a hug. He's the one that pulls Sam down to his level every time, that hugged Cas in Purgatory. But for this one, he's done, he's tired and he's breaking, and he knows this is it this time. So he turns to Cas and he knows Cas knows. Cas is the only one he can be honest with, like he was about the Mark of Cain. So he lets Cas pull him in, and while he plays it off for those around him, you can see it in the slump of his shoulders, for one moment, Dean Winchester lets himself be weak, and let's himself be comforted by his friend, his friend that's always been something a bit more, a friendship that's deeper than either dares to admit. And Cas feels the smile fade off Dean's face, and he feels it in Dean's soul, that need for Cas' companionship, a need Dean may not even understand. And Cas looks Dean in the eyes and offers the only thing he can: his company, and his life. I'll go with you.
Take my hand, take my whole life too...
Crowley: "He did it."
Rowena: "He bloody did it."
Cas: "And Dean?" 11.23
Cas was the first one to ask. All of existence was saved and he couldn't even be happy because he thinks Dean the man he would kill for, die for, give up everything for, is dead. He is just distraught.
