"Okay, Chuck... or God, or whatever. I need your help. See, you– you left us. You left us. You went off. You said... You said the earth would be fine because it had me... and it had Sam. But it's not, and we're not. We've lost everything." [voice breaks] "And now you're gonna bring him back. Okay? You're gonna bring back Cas. 'Cause after everything that you've done, you owe us, you son of a bitch. So you get your ass down here and you make this right, right here and right now. Please. Please help us." Dean praying to God 13.01
A man who never prays literally begs for Cas to come back.
Sam: "Hold on a second. Can we just talk about what happened back there?"
Dean: "Sure. Which part? Let's see. Crowley's dead, Kelly's dead, Cas is —" [he pauses] "Mom's gone, and apparently, the Devil's kid hit puberty in thirty seconds flat. Oh, and almost killed us." 13.01
- Dean to Mia: "He won't even admit that Mom's dead. Won't even admit it. Because if he admits it, then it's real. If it's real, then he has to deal with it, and he can't handle that." Sam: "Yeah, but at least you had a relationship with Mom. And now I'm just supposed to accept that I never will have it?" 13.04
Miriam: "He can do almost anything."
Dean [hopeful]: "Anything?"
Miriam [chuckles]: "Oh, sweetie. Almost anything. Castiel, he's dead. All the way dead, because of you." [crushing Dean's hopes enough to distract him] 13.01
Sam: "Hey... Hey, you, uh, you sure about this, Dean? I mean, it's - it's Cas, you know? Maybe we can bring him back, like you said."
Dean: "No, we can't."
Sam: "Chuck did - Uh, God did. Remember that? So maybe, um, I don't know, maybe if we prayed to him or - or..."
Dean: "You don't think I've tried that? God's not listening. He doesn't give a damn." 13.01
Jack: "I... What do you say?"
Sam: "Right. Thank you. You say thank you. And you say you're sorry. You hope they're somewhere without, uh, sadness or pain. You hope they're somewhere better. You say goodbye."
Dean: "Well, goodbye, Cas." 13.01
"I can hardly look at the kid! Because when I do all I see is everybody we've lost! And what about Cas? He manipulated him, he made him promises, said 'paradise on earth' and Cas bought it and you know what that got him? It got him dead! Now you might be able to forget about that, but I can't!" Dean to Sam 13.03
Dean [in front of a grave]: "All right, well, you said you wanted to help, so, uh..." [throws his shovel at Jack] "Dig."
Sam: "Dean, what's up with all the orders? You're starting to sound like Dad."
Dean: "That a bad thing?"
Sam: "I'm just saying his - his drill sergeant act worked with you... but it didn't work with me. And that's not the way we're gonna get through to Jack."
Dean: "Look, you wanted the kid here, he's here. All right? But I'm not gonna hold his hand and tuck him in at night. Pass. I'm not gonna be his mother, and neither are you." 13.04
The only reason that John Winchester was such an asshole to his kids was because he had lost the love of his life. Who did Dean just lose?
"You just upset your brother so much, he had to leave the room. And Jack? Look at him. He's terrified of you. You're angry, Dean. And if you don't want to do anything about it, that's your business. But you're aiming it at everyone in your life." Mia to Dean while he drinks from his flask at daytime 13.04
The Empty: "Besides, you don't want to go back."
Cas: "Yes, I do. Sam and Dean need me."
The Empty: "Oh, save it. I've tiptoed through all your little tulips, your memories, your little feelings. Yes, I know who you love... and what you fear. There's nothing for you back there." 13.04
Cas being manipulated into believing his love for Dean is unrequited.
The Empty: "Come on, Castiel! Wouldn't you rather be a fond memory than a constant, festering disappointment?" [kicks Cas on the floor] "Just let's lay down. Let's just try and sleep. Think about it. Infinite peace. No regrets. No pain. Kiddo, save yourself."
Castiel: "I'm already saved." [The Empty kicks him again. Cas slowly stands up.] "You can prance and you can preen and you can scream and yell and remind me of my failings but somehow, I'm awake. And I will stay awake and I will keep you awake until we both go insane." [The Empty punches him.] "I will fight you. Fight you and fight you for...ever. For eternity." 13.04
Dean: "I'm gonna go to the other side."
Sam: "Dean, you're talking about killing yourself."
Dean [preparing the syringe]: "Yeah? Well, it worked before."
Sam: "That's an insane risk to take. Don't even... Dean!" [Dean plunges the needle into his chest] "Dean? Hey. Damn it. Hey, hey, hey..." [Sam tries to help Dean but he gasps and dies] "Dean? Dean!" 13.05
Billie: "That’s enough of that."
Dean: "No, I saw Cas kill you."
Billie: "How’s that working out for him? It’s funny to hear a Winchester talk about the finality of dying. This reality – it has rules, Dean. So many rules. And one of them? Kill one incarnation of Death, like you did, the next Reaper to dies takes his place. So… when Castiel stabbed me in the back, turns out, I got a promotion. New job. New gear."
Dean: "So you died to become Death?"
Billie: "This universe can be so many things, and sometimes, it is poetic. That’s why we need to talk." (...)
Dean: "So… am I dead?"
Billie: "You killed yourself."
Dean: "Are you keeping me dead?"
Billie: "Now that depends on you." 13.05
Billie: "You’ve changed. When you bargained with me just now, you could’ve asked to go back, to live."
Dean: "Well, I figured there’s no getting back for me."
Billie: "That doesn’t sound like the Dean Winchester I know and love. The man who has been dead so many times but it never seems to stick. Maybe you’re not that guy anymore, they guy who saves the world, the guy who always thinks he’ll win no matter what. You have changed. And you tell people it’s not a big deal. You tell people you’ll work through it, but you know you won’t, you can’t and that scares the hell out of you. Or... am I wrong?"
Dean: "What do you want me to say? Doesn’t matter. I don’t matter."
Billie: "Don’t you?"
Dean: "I couldn’t save Mom. I couldn’t save Cas. I can’t even save a scared little kid. Sam keeps trying to fix it, but I just keep dragging him down. So I’m not going to beg. Okay, if it’s my time, it’s my time."
Billie: "You really believe that." [Dean nods his head yes] "You wanna die. Dean... every notebook on this particular shelf tells a version of how you die. You specifically. Heart attack, burned by a red-haired witch, stabbed by a ghoul in a graveyard, and on and on. But which one’s right? That depends on you, on the choices you make."
Dean: "Well, I guess I made my choice."
Billie: "But... unfortunately none of these books say you die today."
Dean: "Come again?"
Billie: "Since I got this... new job, I stand witness to a much larger picture. Do you know what I see? You. And your brother. You’re important."
Dean: "Why?"
Billie: "You have work to do. That’s all you need to know. (...) So... you wanna die, but I say... keep living." 13.05
Sam: "You okay?"
Dean: "No. Sam, I'm not okay, I'm pretty far from okay. You know, my whole life, I always believed that what we do was important. No matter what the cost, no matter who we lost, whether it was Dad or... or Bobby or... And I would take the hit. But I kept on fighting because I believed that we were making the world a better place. And now Mom and Cas... And I... I don't know. I don't know."
Sam: "So now you don't believe anymore."
Dean: "Right now, I don't believe in a damn thing. (...) I just need a win. I just need a damn win." 13.05
Dean, the man who has been to hell and back and lost countless people, has lost hope because Cas is dead. Cas is everything Dean believes in.
"For Dean it wasn't just the fact that it was Cas. It was kind of all that he represented." Jensen Ackles
Dean: "Cas, is that really you?"
Sam: "No. You're – you're dead."
Cas: "Yeah, I was. But then I... annoyed an ancient cosmic being so much that he sent me back."
Sam: "I don't even know what to say."
Dean: "I do... Welcome home, pal." [embraces Cas]
Cas: "How long was I gone?"
Dean: "Too damn long."
Sam: "Where were you? In Heaven?"
Cas: "No. No, I was in the Empty."
Dean: "Really?"
Cas: "Apparently, it's where angels and demons go when they die. It's dark and... nothing. It's like... nothing. I was sleeping, and then I heard a voice that said my name, and I woke up. I thought you... had done something." 13.06
Cas: "I came to in a meadow, there was an old windmill with a garden near a quiet brook."
Sam: "That's where Dean spread your ashes." (deleted script)
Sam: "You're in a good mood, huh?"
Dean: "Yeah. And?"
Sam: "Nothing. No, no, I-I-I just, uh... You've been having a rough go, so it's... it's good to see you smile."
Dean: "Well, I said I needed a big win. We got Cas back. That's a pretty damn big win." 13.06
Cas is Dean's big win. The day that Cas gets back Dean is already a happier person, and a much more pleasant person to be around. Dean went from being a depressed widower with a drinking problem, to killing himself and telling death herself that he wants to die and stay dead, and then to smiling and laughing and dressing up as cowboys with Cas. Seriously Cas has that much of a Chuck damn effect on him.
The same man, who was suicidal literally less than a day ago, happily geeks out about Cowboys, now that Cas is back.
Jack: "Dean really likes Cowboys."
Cas: "Yes, he does..." 13.06
Sam looks just as confused as Jack, because Cas saying Yes he does sounds like the kinda man who has had to role play cowboy sexy times one too many times...
"I told you, he's an angry sleeper... like a bear." Cas to Jack about Dean 13.06
How do you know? Cas doesn't sleep. Of course he watches Dean sleep. He's a centuries old, multidimensional being of celestial intent. I'm sure Cas found a way to pass the time before the Winchester's were born, he just likes watching Dean.
Dean: "Just act like you're from Tombstone. The movie. I made you watch it."
Cas: "Yeah, the one with guns and tuberculosis. I'm your Huckleberry."
Dean: "Yeah, exactly. Well, it's good to have you back, Cas. All right, follow my lead." 13.06
Dean made Cas watch movies with him.
Jack: "And when they checked out the grave, it was empty. Which means... the dead are rising in Dodge City, Kansas."
[Cowboy music plays as a dreamy expression crosses Dean's face. Cas glances up as if he heard the music as well, and Dean looks down to hide his smile... Jack glances between the two of them, confused.]
Sam: "Right. O-or maybe it's a-a grave robbery, but..."
Dean: "Yeah, but we should probably check it out."
Cas: "Wait. Really?"
Dean: " Yeah, we've done more on less. Besides Dodge City's kind of, uh, kind of awesome. All right, well... two salty hunters, one half-angel kid, and a dude who just came back from the dead. Again. Team Free Will 2.0. Here we go." 13.06
