'What the heck is scrupulosity?' You're wondering. 'And why does Susana think that the Daniel Craig James Bond has it?'
I'm happy to explain both of those things, because that is the topic of this entry. Scrupulosity is a condition in which someone feels that they have broken a religious or moral rule, when more often than not, they actually haven't, and their desire to do the right thing and be a good person is twisted to the point that the desire to do the right thing is excessive and very unhealthy. Scrupulosity is also a subtype of OCD. Scrupulosity revolves around religion or morality. Or both.
James Bond is a spy with a license to kill. That means he can kill someone at his own discretion in order to complete an assignment. The fact that he holds a license to kill is indicated by his codenumber, 007. Throughout the movies, Bond kills many people. In the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, he questions the morality of his job on multiple occasions. He thinks that by killing so many people, he is slowly killing his soul. And while committing violence, even for a righteous cause, can wear down a person's soul, it doesn't have to.
Feeling guilty about doing something against your morals is often a sign of moral injury.
In Casino Royale, Vesper asks him, "Doesn't it bother you? Killing those people?" Bond answers, "I wouldn't very good at my job if it did." My response to that question is asking Bond a question like that is like asking a member of the military who has seen combat that question: It's a silly question.
How does he have scrupulosity if he's feeling guilty about killing people? You wonder.
I understand why you might ask that. It is true that many people believe killing people is wrong. And I agree that killing people is wrong.
But here's why it's actually morally right when 007 kills someone. When Bond kills, he often does so in self-defense. This is morally permissible.
Furthermore, James kills people who are themselves killers. In the Daniel Craig movies, the bad guys are terrorists. The bad guys he kills are often planning to kill many innocent people and therefore, must be stopped. So Bond kills people who are unjust aggressors.
My faith teaches that using deadly force against an unjust aggressor in order to protect innocent lives is morally permissible and even morally right.
This is why I think the Daniel Craig James Bond has scrupulosity. He kills people who are unjust aggressors to protect innocent people and more often than not, he kills in self-defense. He thinks he is doing something morally wrong and feels guilty about it. But as it turns out, he is actually doing something morally right.
