*Spoiler alert*
So I know a lot of people are divided about how LOKI Season 2 ended. On the one hand, many people are upset that Loki ends up on a throne, which he never wanted, and "alone." His need for companionship is not really a fear. It’s a valid need.
But there are others who are satisfied because of the enormous sacrifice he made. I agree with both perspectives. In Season 1, they set up the whole Loki/Sylvie romance. It's not good for people to be alone. That's what my God said in the Book of Genesis just before he created Eve as the ideal companion for Adam. Because He knew that while the animals brought Adam joy, they could never be a suitable partner for him.
But I also loved how they fully redeemed Loki with this ending. I loved how in this ending, Loki's "For you. For all of us," line had a completely different context. The first time we heard that line, it was in Thor 1. And in Thor 1, it was a plea. Loki was hanging over the side of the Rainbow Bridge, holding on by Grugnir. He was desperate for Odin's approval and he had done some awful things in order to try and get it.
But in the Season 2 finale, it was him saying, "I know what I need to do. I know who I need to become for the good of everyone."
But let me just acknowledge that his need for love, belonging, and acceptance was not selfish. And Loki isn’t truly alone. As human beings, we are physical and so a lot of our needs and perspectives on things come from a physical standpoint. But from a more philosophical/spiritual perspective, Loki is not really alone. He’s with his friends in spirit, watching over them.
And the other thing that I love about this ending is Loki is now one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. He went from being a "puny god," to quote the Hulk, to the most powerful god.
And I think that if Loki can destroy the Loom and become the God of Stories against the options that He Who Remains laid out, who's to say Sylvie can't decide to be with him or just visit him from time to time?
And I know that six days ago, Tom's comments on Jimmy Fallon made it seem like this is his definitive departure from the MCU. But three days ago, he gave an interview on Phase Zero and he said he's not ruling out the possibility of returning to the MCU as Loki since he already did that once (after Infinity War, he thought that it was goodbye to Loki for him and yet they asked him to come back for "LOKI" and "What If"). So I believe that he will keep playing Loki for however long Marvel Studios asks him to.
Either way, I was late in joining the Loki fandom. But since he is now one of my favorite characters in the MCU, I see now that he has always been one of the best characters in the MCU. And Tom Hiddleston has had a big part in making Loki such a compelling character. He just doesn't play Loki. He is Loki. And he has shown that he cares about this character just as much as the fans do.
