Mit einer Kopf-Rumpf-Länge von 340 bis 380 Zentimetern, eine Schulterhöhe von 150 bis 180 Zentimeter und einem Gewicht von 1,8 bis 2 Tonnen bei Kühen und von meist 1,8 bis 2,5 Tonnen bei Bullen (Große Bullen erreichen manchmal auch ein Gewicht von 3,5 Tonnen), ist das Breitmaulnashorn (Ceratotherium simum) das größte und schwerste aller rezenten Nashörner. Der Name Breitmaulnashorn leitet sich von dem breiten Maul ab, welches es gut unterscheidbar macht vom Spitzmaulnashorn (Diceros bicornis), die beiden unterschiedlichen Maulformen zeugen von verschiedenen Ernährungsstilen. So ernähren sich Spitzmaulnashörner vorrangig von weichen Pflanzenmaterialien, wie Blättern und Trieben, während Breitmaulnashörner härtere Pflanzenmaterialien, wie Gräser, bevorzugen.
