Beim Afrikanischen Elefanten (Loxodonta africana), auch Afrikanischen Steppenelefanten wird nach einer Tragzeit von fast zwei Jahren ein einziges Junges geboren.
Damit ist der Afrikanische Elefant das Tier mit der längsten Trächtigkeit, zum Vergleich, der viel größere Blauwal (Balaenoptera musculus) benötigt für das Austragen seines Nachwuchses gerade einmal 11 Monate.
